Bucknell University professor Chris Martine, biology, and the Burpee Chair of Plant Genetics & Research, is the lead author of a new study that announced the discovery of a new plant species in Australia. The new research was announced in the journal PhytoKeys. The new plant has been named solanum watney, after Mark Watney, the fictional astronaut played by Matt Damon in the movie The Martian.

Emma Frawley ’17, Jason Cantley, current Burpee postdoctoral fellow in plant genetics at Bucknell, and Ingrid Jordon-Thaden, who formerly held that position and is now at the University of California-Berkeley, were also listed as co-authors on the study.
