Professor Zhiqun Zhu, director of the China Institute and MacArthur Chair of East Asian Politics, says, “Memories of the early Chinese Communist Army’s triumph over the Japanese serve as a major foundation of the Party’s legitimacy from the very beginning of the People’s Republic,” in regard to the 70th anniversary of the U.S. atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
